This module is a fun game that practices the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The focus of this module is speed, speed and speed. Each day as the student practices the exercises and becomes better and better you will see the confidence start to grow.
Soon they will be challenging anybody to race them. While the math is pretty easy, mastery of these simple equations will lead to dominance of the other games in the CountFast series.
OVERVIEW & PURPOSE
Week 1 of the 3rd Grade CountFast program focuses on the review of quickly adding and subtracting smaller numbers within 120. Spend 15 minutes each day on one of the activities listed in this module. Card decks should go home with students each day for additional practice with a parent at home. Each week, a new deck is introduced, and the previous deck is for the student to keep at home for continued practice.
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
- NCTM Standard: develop a sense of whole numbers and represent and use them in flexible ways, including relating, composing, and decomposing numbers
- Mentally add and subtract within 120.
- Develop fluency with mental addition and subtraction calculations.
- One CountFast 1st card deck for each student. This deck is for school and home use. Discuss routine and expectations for taking home the deck and returning it to school each day.
- One writing utensil per student, optional per teacher plans.
CountFast 1st Pack – Day 1
Teacher Model/Direct: Use the white and yellow cards from the deck. These have the numbers 1-5 written on them as well as a card for addition to 15 (15+) and subtraction from 15 (15-). Hold up the numbers 1 through 5 up, one at a time in sequential order. Students should call out what the total is as each number is presented. (Ex. 1 + 2 = 3, 3 + 3 = 6, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 + 5 = 15) Try this a few times in order, and then repeat after shuffling the numbers. Lead students to understand that no matter what order you add up the numbers 1-5, you will get 15. Then show the numbers one at a time from greatest to least (5-1), but this time have students subtract starting at 15. (Ex. 15 – 5 = 10, 10 – 4 = 6, 6 – 3 = 3, 3 – 2 = 1, 1 – 1 = 0). Repeat 2-3 times. Shuffle the numbers 1-5, and show students that no matter what order we subtract the numbers from 15, we will still end up at zero.
Student Activity: Give each student a deck and ask them to take out the yellow/white cards. Working with a partner, take turns holding up the cards for the partner to either add up to 15, or subtract down from 15.
Home Activity: Students will take home the deck and the “CountFast Home Connection” letter. Students will review the activities for adding up to 15 and subtracting down from 15 with parent. Parent can record how quickly the child adds and subtracts through the cards correctly.
CountFast 1st Pack – Day 2
Teacher Model/Direct: Using the same procedure as Day 1, introduce the blue cards in the deck (6-10, add to 40, subtract from 40). Hold the numbers up one at a time in sequential order and have students call out the running total each time. (Ex: 6 + 7 = 13, 13 + 8 = 21, 21 + 9 = 30, 30 + 10 = 40) Demonstrate to students that you can shuffle the cards 6-10, and they will still add up to 40. Repeat the activity using the cards in sequential order, but this time have students subtract starting with the number 40. (Ex: 40 – 6 = 34, 34 – 7 = 27, 27 – 8 = 19, 19 – 9 = 10, 10 – 10 = 0) Demonstrate that the numbers 6 – 10 can be shuffled but will still subtract down from 40 to zero.
Student Activity: Students will work in partners to practice adding up to, and subtracting down from 40. Students can also review adding to and subtracting down from 15 using yesterday’s cards.
Home Activity: Students will review the activities for adding up to 40 and subtracting down from 40 with parent. Parent can record how quickly the child adds and subtracts through the cards correctly.
CountFast 1st Pack – Day 3
Teacher Model/Direct: Use the pink cards from the deck. Today, show students that the numbers 1-5 can be multiplied up to equal 120, and 120 can be divided down by the numbers 1-5 to equal 1. (Ex. 1 X 2 = 2, 2 X 3 = 6, 6 X 4 = 24, 24 X 5 = 120) (Ex: 120/1 + 120, 120/2 = 60, 60/3 = 20, 20/ 4 = 5, 5/5 = 1) Shuffling the numbers 1-5 produces the same results.
Student Activity: With a partner, practice multiplying up to 120 and dividing down from 120 using the pink cards 1-5.
Home Activity: Students will review the activities for multiplying up to 120 and dividing down from 120 with parent. Parent can record how quickly the child multiplies and divides through the cards correctly.
CountFast 1st – Day 4
Teacher Model/Direct: Use the green cards in the deck to repeat the procedure from Day 1, but this time students will add the numbers 1-10 to equal 55, and subtract the numbers 1-10 from 55 to equal zero. (Ex: 1 + 2 = 3, 3 + 3, = 6, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 + 5 = 15, 15 + 6 = 21, 21 + 7 = 28, 28 + 8 = 36, 36 + 9 = 45, 45 + 10 = 55) Again, show that shuffling numbers 1-10 produces the same results.
Student Activity: . Students will work with partner using green cards to add up to 55 and subtract down from 55.
Home Activity: Students will review the activities for adding up to 55 and subtracting down from 55 with parent. Parent can record how quickly the child adds and subtracts through the cards correctly.
CountFast 1st – Day 5
Teacher Model/Direct: Today, students will work with subtracting the number 7. Use the orange cards in the deck and begin with the card 40-7. (Ex: 40 – 7 = 33, 33 – 7 = 26, 26 – 7 = 19, 19 – 7 = 12, 12 – 7 = 5). Repeat this exercise several times until students can subtract seven each time without counting.
Student Activity: With a partner, take turns subtracting 7 beginning at 40. If time allows, practice subtracting 7 beginning at 100.
Home Activity: Students will review the activity for subtracting 7. Parents can record amount of time it takes the child to subtract from 40 without mistakes.
